dmouse - you're right
"A degree doesn't make you more intelligent"
But it would have been nice to have had the chance to study for one.
JW's simply don't have that choice!
engrish has thrown down the gauntlet by insulting my people about iq.
besides fact that iq bogus, engrish overlook nother fact.. what is intelligence?
what is knowledge?

i wonder how the average iq of most jw's would measure up to the average iq of non-witnesses?.
i think that they would rate less than most.
i say this because, having met up with a few still-witnesses recently, they just don't seem to be too prolific in the brain cell department.
I did say "Most" JW's
You're obviously one of the exceptions.

Intelligent people are generally inquisitive, studious, thoughtful and sceptical - qualitities sadly lacking in most JW's.
That's what really annoys me about them - they sit there listening to all that crap and never ever question it - I never heard one answer in any Watchtower study, book study or any other study where someone put their hand up and said they didn't agree with what was said.
Of course thinking people usually leave at the first opportunity
the "please be seated" post rememded me of our experiences at the last district assemblies we attended.. it was in the nynex / manchester evening news arena and it was hot ... damn hot.
they were obviously being 'cheap' and not paying for the air conditioning to be turned on.. liam was a baby and was becoming unwell because of the heat.
he was overheating badly which is pretty dangerous at that age so we stripped him off and took him out up the steps to the concourse.
Assemblies were great when I was still going - well they were held at the home of football - Maine Road, Manchester.
Worst assembly experience is one I can't actually remember.
When I was 18 months old there was a large week long International marathon assembly at Wembley Stadium. Talks started at 9am and went on (I'm told) till about 7pm, with some old speakers waffling on for almost 2 hours.
Of course my family had to roomed (put up) near the stadium. For anyone who knows Wembley you wouldn't stay there if you were paid - it's the pits.
I got dysentry and ended up on a drip for 4 days back at a children's hospital in Manchester. Oh yes, many's the time we've laughed about this experience.
What a blessing such sacrifices were to the organisation !!
celtic here.. i realise many of you are not yet upto scratch on downright going for the society, that's cool.. for those of you more radical activists out there, what better possible manner in which to cause major disruption and to teach something of our aims to a potential massive audience, than to attend a district convention near you.. saucepans and sticks don't half make one hell of a din.. digital cameras are cool too to record all activity and to possibly edit later on for possible leverage with media bodies interested in the event etc.. the point is, is to have a watertight angle on which to go in on, to cause the best possible effect to our strategic advantage.
that means imforming the media of our presence in advance plus many other initiatives that will be described as part of a longer post on this subject tomorrow.. take a leaf out of the uk road protesters and anti global capitalists book, they could teach us a thing or two.. so who's up from you bunch of slackers, for causing major disruptions this year?
bring your wire snippers with you.. peace.
Get real !!
I remember the "Evil Slave" class stood outside Assemblies with their banners and their leaflets.
It only served to strengthen the faith of the average JW - that they were serving the Faithful Slave and that the banner waving nuts were just Apostates.
You won't force change in these people.
the latest watchtower (july 1st) it says this: (bold mine).
(page 13 para 17) now is the time for jehovah to express mercy to his anointed servants and their other sheep companions.
the evidence that this is so is the extraordinary increase with which he has blessed them... .

I'm sure the WTS would like a worldwide disaster to bring the reluctant and disappearing back into the fold.

Blondie - this is so true !
We had a number of inactive ones who started to go to meetings again during the Gulf War. I'm sure the same was the case after the Sept 11 terrorist attack.
A relative recently talked to me about the increase in numbers, "especially in developing countries". I replied that it was "only in developing countries!"
I do think we'll see a continuing fall in numbers from now on in Westernised countries.
another question.. this one is for all those that began doubting the organisation when they were an obedient jw.. although i am sure you rarely shared it with anyone, what was the one problem you had with a certain jw only doctrine?.
what i mean is, what little gremlins lurked at the back of your mind?
what were the doubts that you kept hidden and what made you finally act on them?.
Hello there In-between !
I'd been born and raised a Witness, had no "personal wrongs" done against me and generally enjoyed the company of those at the hall.
By the age of 13 I had bible studies going with school friends and believed all of what I was told at the meetings. Over the next 4 years everything changed.
Several things made me begin to doubt. As I grew older I began to see how horrific and violent some of the old testament stories were. I could not reconcile these with a "loving creator".
All scientists were treated as liars who made up evidence to back up their theories. But scientists who agreed with the society were quoted endlessly in the books/magazines. All quotes generally had bits missing from the quotes. I always thought this was suspicious but only discovered more about these quotes years later.
Having been a JW for the first 20 years of my life I already knew of certain doctrinal changes. People who saw 1914 had to be of an age of understanding (10 - 14 years old in 1914). Then as time went on it was people born just before (5 years old). Then it was people born in 1914 !!
When I finally left (in 1991) I remember telling my mother that the society would have to change its doctrine re 1914 because time was running out. Four years later when she told me of the "new thought" from the society about the generation doctrine I felt slightly vindicated.
By the mid eighties just about everything made me doubt - I remember the new song book coming out with 100+ new songs and thinking they were all crap, I mean really bad. If they were written by Gods' earthly organisation surely they had to have some kind of inspiration, didn't they ?
I had doubts about the flood, number of earthquakes, age of fossils and dinosaurs, just about all their teachings really.
If you have a gut feeling that all is not right with the Watchtower then get out !!

They have a very easy group and then an easy run to the semis
Their teams have done well in Europe - Bayern, Leverkusen and Dortmund.

what the head makes cloudy the heart makes very clear.. we judge ourselves by our intentions; others judge us by our actions
Getting in the car after it was over and going home - the feeling of relief was amazing !!
Best moment was doing a "rain dance" with a friend when I was about 8 years old just before the meeting for field service - by the time the meeting was over it was throwing it down and we had to go home !
